What Is the Merkava?
The divine chariot of Ezekiel, a foundational image of Jewish mystical imagination and sacred ascent.
A chariot of divine presence
Merkavah is the Hebrew word for “chariot.” In mystical and scholarly usage, it most often refers to the throne-chariot revealed in Ezekiel's opening vision and to later traditions inspired by that revelation.
The vision combines living creatures, wheels covered with eyes, fire, wings, a crystalline expanse, and a radiant throne. Rather than functioning as a mechanical blueprint, these images communicate sovereignty, mobility, intelligence, holiness, and transcendence.
From prophecy to mysticism
Centuries after Ezekiel, Jewish mystics developed traditions concerned with the divine throne, angelic praise, sacred names, visionary ascent, and heavenly palaces. These currents are now commonly discussed as Merkabah and Hekhalot mysticism.
The Merkava is not simply a vehicle. It is an image of ordered movement around the mystery of divine presence.
Ancient and modern meanings
Modern spiritual teachings often use the spelling “Merkaba” for a star-tetrahedron or light-body practice. This is a distinct modern development. My Merkava presents both subjects while keeping the historical difference visible.
